At the Bicester Town Council’s Mayor Making Ceremony on 14 May 18 Garrison Sergeant Major WO1 (GSM) Lee Davies was publicly thanked for his achievements in community engagement with the presentation of a Good Citizen Award.
Sgt Maj Davies arrived in Bicester as the Garrison Sergeant Major in Apr 2016 and immediately took a lead in local community engagement.
A large part of his work has been to form a close relationship with Bicester Town Council to work towards bringing the local community and garrison together.
“When I received the Mayor’s Good Citizen Award I felt really humble as I was simply delivering a military task which I wholeheartedly believed in,†said Sgt Maj Davies.
“Whilst I was honoured to be the recipient the award is really for the soldiers of Bicester Garrison who made me proud to be their Garrison Sergeant Major.â€
Community support
Sgt Maj Davies played a role in bringing the Bicester Carnival together to be held in conjunction with Armed Forces Day (AFD), which proved to be hugely successful.
He has also worked hard to forge alliances with the local parish churches and worked with them in order to help support their Remembrance Day services.
His work with the churches has resulted in the local Ambrosden church being offered over by the Cherwell Benefice for military personnel to consider as their “Garrison Churchâ€.
Sgt Maj Davies has also assisted the Council with organising its St George’s Day lunch held at the Bicester Garrison Officers’ Mess.
A spin off of this engagement was becoming involved in Hummingbird, a cancer support and therapy centre in Bicester where he has given talks and support to people.
Sgt Maj Davies’ Commanding Officer, Lt Col Lyndon Robinson RLC, said: “Bicester Garrison has through the GSM worked hard to promote community engagement in all its forms. That the Town Council wished to publicly honour the prime mover in this field is; to use the vernacular ‘ simply epic.â€
The award was presented to Sgt Maj Davies by the outgoing Bicester Town Mayor Councillor, Les Sibley.
