PFA challenge for London Air Ambulance

During 24 hours between Mon 6 Aug and 1200 Tues 7 Aug Maj Javed Johl of RMAS, completed 24 personal fitness assessments to raise money for London’s Air Ambulance.

He has much to thank the charity for. In Apr last year he had a motorbike accident and was run over by a lorry.

This left him unable to move from the road and in need of the help from the other motorists, thankfully one of which was an ‘off-duty’ paramedic on his way to work.

Maj Johl was seriously injured with his pelvis fractured in three places, multiple fractured vertebrae and a dislocated thumb and had to be airlifted to hospital by the Air Ambulance.

He had to undergo surgery where the surgeon stabilised his thumb and placed some nuts and bolts into his pelvis.

He then spent two weeks on the ward to recover and was on morphine for nine days.

Following discharge, Maj Johl spent ten weeks in a wheel chair whilst his pelvis healed. He was taken to Headley Court for rehabilitation and to assist with the transition between using a wheelchair and walking.

Maj Johl recently marked a year since he transitioned out of a wheelchair, a pretty impressive achievement, PFA challenge aside.

“Over the past 12 months I have slowly been regaining my strength and ability to function as normal person again,” Maj Johl said.

“I owe my recovery to the staff of the Air Ambulance and if it wasn’t for them, I do not believe I would have been able to recover as well as I have.”
