After a sabbatical of a few years, the opportunity for individuals to apply to join the Army for twelve months as a young officer is set to return at the start of the next Academic year (September 2016) and the Royal Logistic Corps has requested a share of successful applicants.
After 8 weeks of training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS), successful applicants will be given the rank of Second Lieutenant and command some of the finest soldiers in the world for the remainder of their gap year. During this fully paid year out, they can gain unrivalled experience that will be invaluable to subsequent job applications after leaving university. The Army also benefits from increasing awareness amongst the next generation of graduates who may go on to serve as members of the Army Reserve, or simply be more understanding to colleagues and subordinates who wish to commit to Reserve service.
During their time on the scheme, Gap Year Cadets will have the chance to take part in overseas training exercises, adventurous training across the world and team and individual sports. They will live with other junior officers in the Officer’s Mess and be paid around £18,000.
Skills successful applicants shall gain will include learning to overcome physical and mental challenges, development of their leadership qualities and acquisition of management skills.
Once they finish the Gap Year Commission, individuals are not expected to carry on serving, but may continue their military career as a commissioned officer in the Army Reserve whilst at university, or apply for the Regular Commissioning course if they develop a desire to serve as an officer full time.
Who can apply?
- To apply for the scheme, candidates should be about to start your final year at school, and be planning to go to university after their gap year
- Applicants must be 18 by the time they plan to start at Sandhurst (1 August)
- Applicants must be predicted to get 180 UCAS points (or equivalent) and have 35 ALIS points, including a C or above in English language, maths and a science or foreign language). They will need to meet these standards to start training
- Applicants must already have a confirmed offer of a university place
- Applicants should be physically fit
