Horses and Wagons – A WW1 Living History Event

Horses & Wagons  –  The Unsung Heroes of WW1

A World War One Living History Display of Horse Transport and Supply

9th – 11th August 2024

The Royal Logistic Corps Museum, Worthy Down, SO21 2RG

The Royal Logistic Corps Horse-Drawn Heritage Team will be back at the Museum from 9th – 11th August 2024 for their free-to-enter WW1 living history event.

This free event featuring real horses is suitable for all the family.  Join us and find out about the crucial role horses played in the First World War.

You can expect to see:

  • Team members in authentic WW1 uniform explaining the life and work of a horse from 1914 onwards.
  • Genuine horse-drawn vehicles from the Heritage Team’s collection, including a General Service Wagon, a Horse Ambulance, a Water Cart and a Mess Cart.
  • A working WW1 forge operated by re-enactor Jarvis Browning demonstrating the work of a First World War Farrier
  • Scheduled displays and talks with one of our war horses and riders, to explore the work and life of the horse and soldier in WW1.
  • The 3-day event will also have staffed displays of veterinary equipment and skills; field kitchen equipment on display; WW1 weapons and a Vickers Machine Gun.

Join us and find out how the trenches were resupplied using pack horses; how injured horses were transported back to safety in the horse ambulance; what the role of the wheelwright was; and what life was like for a soldier in 1914-1918 in a display housed in a bell tent.

If that wasn’t enough, we will be selling sausage and bacon rolls cooked on a WW1 soyer stove AND the Museum will be open. The event and the Museum are entirely free to enter but donations by cash and card are welcomed.

The RLC Aquatics open water swimming team made history! Led by WO1 Shawn Bailey MBE, the incredible team completed a two-way swim across the English Channel, from England to France and back again, with a total swim time of 22 hours and 16 minutes. This phenomenal achievement marks them as the first ever mixed military relay team to conquer this feat, and the first in RLC history to do so. Since 1875, only 48 other teams have achieved this, and they are the only military team this century to join them.Through relentless training, unshakable determination, and exceptional skill, they also raised £7885 for military charities during our journey. Huge congrats to the team: WO1 Shawn Bailey MBE, Maj Clive Allford, Maj John Howell, Maj Paul Vidler, Capt Lucy Powell, Cpl Kelly May and Cpl Emma Meechan #WeAreTheRLC #youbelonghere #wesustain ...
