Benevolence
Benevolence is a Service-wide charitable activity, which in the case of The RLC is funded by the Day’s Pay Scheme.
The RLC aims to serve its community which includes all RLC serving soldiers, Reservists, their families and eligible dependants and RLC veterans, for life. It was set up soon after the Second World War to look after serving and retired servicemen in time of need, hardship or distress. RLC Benevolence has evolved in line with other Service charities and comprises of three areas:
- Benevolent grant for serving and retired personnel, Reservists and their eligible dependants.
- The Medical Discharge grant scheme.
- The Off Duty Accident, Death or Injury scheme.
Examples of Benevolent Grants Awarded
- The ABF/TSC assited RLC Benevolence to provide a grant for a stair-lift and a walk-in shower rooms so an injured ex-ACC soldier could continue to live at home in comfort.
- A grant was awarded to secure funds for an electric wheelchair for an ex-RCT soldier who had suffered a stroke, funded with the help from ABF/TSC.
- RLC Benevolence assisted the family of a young SNCO diagnosed with a debilitating, terminal illness. A grant was made to the local council for home disability adaptations.
- A grant for travel and other expenses was made to a young family whose baby was born prematurely, meaning that the infant needed specialist post-natal care fifty miles from home.
- A young Commonwealth soldier whose brother had been killed back home in his native country received a grant to help with unforeseen in-country expenses.
