A new online learning platform has been launched by the Department of Education to help boost the nation’s workplace skills whilst in lockdown.
The free platform, better known as ‘The Skills Toolkit’, allows people to build on existing knowledge and gain confidence with new skills whilst staying at home during the coronavirus outbreak.
The Skills Toolkit gives people access to free digital and numeracy courses, tools and resources to develop their skills and boost their job prospects. The courses have been selected with the help of expects and leading employers to ensure they meet the needs of businesses both now and in the future. It is part of a long-term plan to boost employability, particular as the country faces recovery from the current COVID-19 situation.
Education Secretary Gavin Williamson says:
“The high-quality and free to access courses on offer on our new online learning platform, The Skills Toolkit, will help those whose jobs have been affected by the outbreak, and people looking to boost their skills while they are staying at home, protecting the NHS and saving lives.”
Who it’s for
Courses range from introductory level, where people can gain confidence being online, to intermediate and more advanced training. All courses can be completed at home at a convenient time and pace for each person and can help to develop both personal and business skills.
For those already serving, the courses can develop existing skills (alongside resources already provided by the Army) and help to get ahead online, gaining essential knowledge for working in the future. The courses can also be used to boost the skills of family and friends too.
With 82% of job vacancies now requiring digital skills, for those currently looking for employment (e.g. service leavers or veterans) or employees from any sector that have been furloughed, this free platform provides a great opportunity to boost your CV.
Course Examples
Learn for Everyday Life – a selection of lessons covering a variety of digital skills including improving your CV, dealing with online fraud and how to master video calling.
Make it Click – various tools and resources to help improve your knowledge of using email, Microsoft Office applications, social media and staying safe online.
Everyday Maths – a chance to refresh your maths skills to help with everyday life as well as your career. The course includes activities such as converting fractions to decimals, understanding percentages and understanding how to use tables and diagrams.
How to Create Great Online Content – designed to help you discover the importance of tone, style and format in your online communications and what makes them effective in different situations.
Digital Skills: Social Media (for business) – learn how to use social media to establish and improve your brand, create engaging content and identify your target audience. A course particularly useful for those looking into new careers or developing their entrepreneurial skills.
